Help us Help more vulnerable children
‘I was always getting in trouble, Barnardo’s helped me get a trade and start my life again’
Giving excluded young people a chance to shine
In 2017 Awards International is raising money for The Hub in Stepney Green, East London which supports around 30-35 vulnerable young people a year to get vocational qualifications. It takes £155,000 to run this service for a year. The young people we will be supporting at this service are struggling on the fringes of mainstream education. They often come from families facing severe and debilitating circumstances and challenges. Deprivation and poverty; parents with mental health and substance misuse issues; overcrowded and unsafe housing; domestic violence – these are all daily occurrences in the lives of some of the children we help. As a consequence, children can act out, struggle to concentrate in school. They are often excluded and are at serious risk of being isolated from employment and independent living.
How does Barnardo’s help
As well as helping young people to gain qualifications (GCSE equivalents) –and help them get into Further Education college, employment, and apprenticeships (our success rate is around 90%), the Barnardo’s workers help our young people develop their personal social skills, and grow their self-esteem. They provide these young people with the vital counselling and emotional support they need to deal with their complex and often traumatic backgrounds and complicated lives. They liaise with other professionals on behalf of our young people, working with schools and families to improve support networks, which are vital to ensuring continued progression and sticking with goals. It’s not just qualifications, we help them come to terms with their issues and help them cope and stay the course.
YOU can make a difference
- We are aiming to raise £20,000 for Barnardo’s year which would put 20 young people through the ‘construction skills course’ at the HUB and help them into employment. By buying raffle tickets at our event you can help us make a real difference to some young people lives.
